The Girls with Too Much Skin


Every morning at 5:30am without fail, Lucy and Hannah Betts from Great Yarmouth begin a punishing but life saving ritual. Helped by their mother Jan, they soak for two hours in the bath, scrubbing their skin until it is raw, to remove the extra hardened layers that have formed overnight, and then covering themselves with a thick, greasy barrier of protective cream. The whole process is repeated at bedtime. 


The Betts sisters suffer from Harlequin Ichthyosis, a rare genetic condition for which there is no cure. Harlequin sufferers grow more skin overnight than a normal person does in two weeks. As it grows, their skin forms a thick, tight, crust that can crack open, allowing infection to enter if left untreated. It not only covers their visible body parts but clogs up their ears and makes their eyelids thick and abrasive.
